The main event at the New Orleans stop on the World Series of Poker Circuit kicked off at Harrah’s New Orleans Monday.

The $5,000+$150 event saw 156 entries creating a total prize pool of $756,600.

Pros including T.J. Cloutier, Allen Kessler, Shannon Shorr, Steve Brecher, James Van Alstyne, and “Captain” Tom Franklin were joined on the felt by 2009 WSOPC New Orleans champion Jean “Prince” Gaspard, three-time WSOPC gold ring winner Dwyte Pilgrim and local celebrities including World famous chef Paul Prudhomme.

Just 69 players survived through to Day 2 and the entire group will be looking up at overnight chip leader Joel Merwick when play resumes Tuesday.

Pros Eric Cloutier, Jimmy Tran, Matt Brady and the aforementioned Gaspard remain in close contention.

The main event at Harrah’s New Orleans continues through May 19. 

This is the sixth straight year Harrah’s New Orleans has been a part of the WSOP Circuit marking the 11th and final WSOP Circuit stop of the 2009-2010 season.
